Painting the Sights of Summer

@copyright Glennda Field

Painting the Sights of Summer Workshop  on July 16 found 15 students painting Multnomah Falls.  The painting on the left uses mostly warm tones to capture the lush greenery surrounding the most visited tourist sight in the state of Oregon.

This was my demonstration painting for the morning session.

Multnomah Falls II - one more version of the majestic falls.  This one includes some cooler tones of red and blue to emphasize the contrast of the granite cliffs against the sunlit trees as the sun comes up from the east.

The afternoon session was scheduled to include a painting of  the students favorite summer flower.  However, the class was so focused on finishing their Multnomah Falls painting that we had only enough time for me to demonstrate painting a white Matjilla Poppy.

Coat of Many Colors

A rooster on the grass with sky as the background.  Hmmm.....nice but no wow factor.   Did a little reworking, had a lot of fun, enjoyed using a wider variety of colors with some added compositional elements and ended up with a flamboyant bird.

It's nearly the season for Sunflowers

Columbia Gorge Art Festival 2014

The Columbia Gorge Art Festival is always a wonderful event.  Artists from all around the area bring their paintings, pottery, hats, cards, quilts, soap, jewelry, garden art, wood carvings, photography, hand made gifts and many other wonderful products to sell.  A portion of the proceeds goes to the Corbett School District.  A beautiful drive in the Columbia Gorge is always a good choice for a Saturday or Sunday Drive and the Columbia Gorge Art Festival is definitely a stop you will want to make.

Here is my space before the Festival started.  There are still  paintings available so if you see one you want get in touch with me.  Glenndafieldart@gmail.com

Redo - White Tulips reworked

I decided to rework this painting.  It is an acrylic on canvas 24 x 36.  I liked it but it was never quite right so I spent some time on it and now I love it!

Before the tweaking

Sometimes you just have to look at a painting for a while to see what will work and what won't.  I'm glad I spent the time to do some tweaking.  Now I like it a lot.  What do you think?

Deep Purple

Yes! I am so delighted that my painting Deep Purple, selected by juror Robert Burridge, is to be included in the Watercolor Society of Oregon's Spring 2014 Aqua-Media show. Getting the news was like getting an unexpected, wonderful Christmas gift. I'm so excited.

Sierra Nevada Foothills

We happened upon this old barn while in central California during December . The location among the Sierra Nevada Foothills, its stately weathered frame, the time burnished sienna hue and worn board character talked to my heart.  It reminded me of a fading era when the family farm was America and the huge corporate farming operations of today were not even a consideration.  Today we are all rushing to get somewhere.  On this farm you were already somewhere.  Home and work were one.  You didn't miss the beauty of the day because you lived it and reverenced it on your daily walk to the barn.  I'm glad it is still standing to remind us........but it won't be standing long.  Does anyone care what it has sheltered, does anyone share it's stories............................

Paintings ideas that can be used for custom Christmas cards

@The copyright of all the images in this blog remains with me, the artist, Glennda Field.  Please do not use images with my permission.

My watercolor class asked for painting ideas that could be turned into a personalized Christmas card.  These are two of the paintings I demonstrated in class.

"While shepherds watched their flocks..........................................."

Christmas Present

Christmas Present has elements from two fellow artists whose work I really enjoy.  If you are familiar with Denise McFadden or Bev Jozwiak, both Washington artists, you will notice their two painting techniques in this painting.  Thanks for the inspiration Bev and Denise.

Using suitable colors, a painting title  and perhaps a few added details to tell the story, a Christmas card can evolve from many different subjects.  Here are a few more suggestions

"It's a Marshmallow World "
Jingle Bells.....Jingle Bells

Ho Ho Ho.........Merry Christmas
"For unto you is born this day....A Savior, which is Christ the Lord"

 "Finding the Perfect Christmas Tree"

Black Eyed Susan's - Watercolor Class

Today's subject in watercolor class was Black Eyed Susan's.  Here are two of my simple composition demonstrations for Black Eyed Susan's:

This version of the same flower was painted on a blank greeting card.

This is a sketchbook painting of a Black Eyed Susan using a limited pallete of secondary colors orange, green and purple.
